Jazz Alley Mural 90'x12' 2009In celebration of the Kuumbwa Jazz Centers 35th anniversary, Marvin Plummer created this mural using photos taken from performances at Kuumbwa. The mural features five portraits of great jazz artists who were chosen by the Kuumbwa Jazz Center as musicians who have been regular visitors to the club over its 35 years. They include bassist Christian McBride, guitarist John Scofield, violinist Regina Carter, trumpeter Roy Hargrove and singer Betty Carter. Kuumbwa executive director Tim Jackson said the five were chosen for their individual connections to Kuumbwa. With the exception of Betty Carter, who was already an established star when we started and who died in 1998, Santa Cruz grew up with these artists.

Visitors and residents have enjoyed paintings of the Santa Cruz boardwalk, marine animals, robots, happy pets and much more! The “Graphic Traffic” program helps reduce graffiti and contributes to a vibrant landscape. Typically the City Arts program issues an annual call for proposals.The City Arts Commission may develop themes or target specific areas for new or replaced signal box art. All painted boxes are finished with graffiti coating. Please note that many of the utility boxes in town are owned by other agencies (e.g. Comcast, ATT etc.) and are not eligible for painting.

State percent for art policies are mechanisms for enhancing the built environment and for making public spaces more appealing, useful or accessible through the incorporation of artworks. With these policies, legislatively created in almost all cases, a small portion of the budget for construction or renovation of state buildings is set aside for the purchase, installation and/or maintenance of public artwork, which is usually installed on the grounds of the capital project.
